The Graphics Interchange Format (better known by its acronym GIF /ˈdʒɪf/ JIF or /ˈɡɪf/ GHIF) is a bitmap image format that was developed by American computer scientist Steve Wilhite while working at the bulletin board service (BBS) provider CompuServe on June 15, 1987.[1] It has since come into widespread usage on the World Wide Web due to its wide support and portability.

Compared to other messaging apps, WhatsApp was slow to allow its one billion customers to send GIFs to each other.
In November 2016, the Facebook-owned company allowed everyone on iOS to send and search for the internet’s favourite file format – this inclusion was after the addition of GIFs for Android users.
Just days later, the app added the function to search as well as send them on iOS. To do so, you need to be running at least version 2.16.16 of the iOS app. Before the search function was added version 2.16.15 of the messaging app included the ability to send and receive animated GIFs, turn your videos into GIFs (as long as the clip was six seconds or shorter) and send Live Photos as animated GIFs.
Now WhatsApp is improving the GIF offering by letting its users search through and send GIFs from Giphy on Android.
How to search for GIFs on Android
Leveraging the power of Giphy, Android users are able to send a huge variety of moving images. The v2.17.6 beta of the Android app lets those running the operating system search and send GIFs from the website’s archives. It should be noted that the feature is in beta and it is unclear when it will roll out more widely. As a result, some users may not yet be able to see the tool.
According to The Next Web if you press the emoji button next to the text inpyt area on Android and flick to the GIF section the search will be available.
How to send GIFs on WhatsApp
To search for, and then send, a GIF, click the ‘+’ button, select Photo & Video Library and your camera roll should appear. As part of the latest update, a small magnifying glass is now shown in the bottom left-hand corner with the word ‘GIF.’ Select this and rows of GIFs will appear. You can either browse, or search for a particular animation.
Alternatively you can save GIFs to your handset, although saving directly from the Giphy website, for example, defaults to saving the GIF as a static image.
If you install the Giphy app you can also search for the GIF you want by reaction (Happy), person or character (Alan Partridge) or show (Seinfeld). Or you can browse popular GIFs and topics.
Select the GIF you want to send and below it you’ll see a row of icons including SMS, email, Messenger, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. Press the three dots at the end of this row of icons to see the link and share icons.
Click Share, select WhatsApp, choose your recipient and press send.
How to turn a video into a GIF on WhatsApp
Open the WhatsApp chat you want to use to send the GIF.
Click the ‘+’ sign in the bottom left-hand corner and go to Photo & Video Library and select a video.
Trim the clip to the length you want, annotate, doodle or crop the video using the tools in the top right-hand corner and then toggle the blue icon to GIF. This will generate your GIF and you can send it in the traditional way.
If you’be set it so that shared photos and videos on WhatsApp are saved to your camera roll, any GIF you create and share will be stored. Alternatively you can press and hold a shared GIF to save it to your phone. You can also forward shared GIFs to other WhatsApp contacts from this menu.
